Francis Hughes was commemorated in a ceremony in South Derry on Sunday, 15th May. The event was chaired by Sean Kerr who introduced the guest speaker, Sinn Féin MP Martin McGuinness. Martin spoke about Frank’s life, the circumstances that compelled him into making a stand and joining the IRA, his courage in life, his steadfastness during the blanket protest and his death on hunger strike. He also remarked that five out of the ten hunger strikers were from County Derry.
“While the hunger strikers will be remembered for their heroic stand, Thatcher, on the other hand, remains despised for her treatment of not only Irish political prisoners but for what she did to her own people, especially to the English, Welsh and Scottish miners.”
